Volgens Túlio Espanca werd hier in 1659 een oratorium gebouwd in opdracht van D. Luísa de Gusmão, weduwe van D. João IV (r. 1640-1656) als dank voor de Portugese overwinning in de Slag om de Elvas Lines. In 1680, tijdens het bewind van D. Pedro II (r. 1675-1706) en op eigen initiatief, werden werken uitgevoerd door pater Francisco Tinoco da Silva, waar de tempel veel profijt van had. Het is onvermijdelijk dat 18 jaar later, in 1698, na de explosie van het buskruitmagazijn van het kasteel, nieuwe werken nodig waren, hoewel deze kapel volgens een tijdsverloop niet zwaar beschadigd was, wat betekende dat het een ander wonder was. van de heilige koningin.

Tegelpanelen en olieverf, beide duidelijk Johannine, zijn volgens José Meco te wijten aan de eerste aan Teotónio dos Santos (circa 1725) en de tweede aan André Gonçalves (1730s), volgens Maria de Lourdes Cidraes. De tegeltableaus en olieverfschilderijen zijn representatief voor het leven en de legendarische beeldspraak van koningin St. Elizabeth, met name de wonderen die haar werden toegeschreven, die de oorzaak waren van haar heiligverklaring in 1625 door paus Urbanus VIII. Het weelderige witte marmeren koor draagt een Latijnse inscriptie uit 1808 en bedankt de mensen van Estremoz aan Santa Isabel voor het beschermen tegen de plundering van de Franse invasies.
