Secondo Túlio Espanca, un oratorio fu costruito qui nel 1659, per ordine di D. Luísa de Gusmão, vedova di D. João IV (r. 1640-1656) in ringraziamento per la vittoria portoghese nella Battaglia delle Linee di Elvas. Nel 1680, durante il regno di D. Pedro II (r. 1675-1706) e di sua iniziativa, i lavori furono eseguiti da padre Francisco Tinoco da Silva, a tutto vantaggio del tempio. Inevitabilmente, 18 anni dopo, nel 1698, dopo l'esplosione della rivista di polvere da sparo del castello, furono necessarie nuove opere, anche se, secondo un resoconto dell'epoca, questa cappella non fu gravemente danneggiata, il che implicava che era un altro miracolo. della santa regina.

I pannelli di piastrelle e la tela ad olio, entrambi chiaramente Johannine, sono attribuibili al primo a Teotónio dos Santos (circa 1725), secondo José Meco, e il secondo ad André Gonçalves (1730), secondo Maria de Lourdes Cidraes. I pannelli di piastrelle e i dipinti ad olio sono rappresentativi della vita e delle immagini leggendarie della regina Santa Elisabetta, in particolare i miracoli che le sono stati attribuiti, che furono la causa della sua canonizzazione nel 1625 da papa Urbano VIII. Il lussureggiante coro di marmo bianco reca un'iscrizione latina del 1808 che ringrazia il popolo di Estremoz a Santa Isabel per averlo protetto dal saccheggio delle invasioni francesi.
