Le 25 septembre 1924, l'inauguration officielle du funiculaire de la colline de San Cristobal a eu lieu. Il a été créé grâce à l'initiative du maire Alberto Mackenna.
Le funiculaire parcourt près de 500 mètres d'un avion incliné à 45 degrés depuis le quartier de Bellavista.
Le funiculaire a deux voitures, dont l'une porte un panneau de rappel mentionnant que Jean-Paul II est monté dans cette voiture en 1987, alors qu'il allait célébrer une messe aux pieds de la vierge au sommet de la colline. Dans un article publié dans le journal La Tercera, il y aura dans les années à venir un funiculaire similaire, mais en remontant cette fois-ci dans la commune de Recoleta, en direction de la Vierge du Morro de San Cristobal.
Il est situé sur la colline San Cristobal à Providencia.
C'est un must pour les touristes et Santiago, le week-end, a deux saisons, une pour visiter le zoo et une autre pour atteindre le sommet.
